All kinds of misery - the blues, anti-war music from the 60's, teenage angst, heartbreak - if life were great, would music be the same powerful communication tool it is today? Would teenagers relate to bands like Pantera, The Sex Pistols, and Slipknot if there wasn't so much to be angry about? Strange how so much pain can create something so beautiful.

Weekend Events

So here's what's playing in Eugene this weekend - I'm posting this so I can come back in a year and figure out what's different and what's the same. :)

(Thanks to the Eugene Weekly for the calendar)
Friday
OUT/LOUD queer women's music festival, w/God-des & She, Sistas n the Pit, The Ovulators, Sophie Lux, 8pm, McDonald Theatre. The studio has moved and we are still trying to get that part situated; who knew there were so many decisions to make about a one room building? When it is time to have the grand opening party I know everyone out there will be as impressed as I am with the space and the location. The creative genius is already planning concerts on the back forty, so hold on, we're in for a wild ride!! :))

Here's To 2007

Myspace Comments

Merry Christmas

<img style="FLOAT: left; Over the next twenty-two weeks, the recording held fast to the chart, occupying the number two position for four weeks. "Let the Good Times Roll" was paired with the fast paced and humorous "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens"—a phenomenally popular release that ranked number one for seventeen weeks. Such success was commonplace for Jordan. From 1943 until 1950, his singles topped the R&B chart more than 25% of the time. Fifteen hits crossed over to the pop charts.

Born in Brinkley, Arkansas in 1908, Louis Jordan started playing saxophone at seven. As a teenager, he toured with the famed Rabbit Foot Minstrels and backed blues singers including Bessie Smith. In the 1930s, Jordan settled in New York City. There, he began performing under band leader Chick Webb. Webb pulled the saxophonist out of the ensemble to sing the novelty songs that would remain a crucial part of Jordan's repertoire.

By 1938, Jordan headed his own band, showcasing his talents as vocalist, conductor, and comedian. Soon, Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five were making popular recordings of songs like "Whats the Use of Getting Sober (When your Gonna Get Drunk Again)," "The Chicks I Pick Are Slender, Tender, and Tall," and Johnny Mercer's "G.I. Jive."

Jordan's swinging style, once described as "jazz with a broad grin," combined musical innovation with humor and jive talk. He introduced jump blues and boogie-woogie to the masses, paving the way for rock and roll. In the course of his career, this excellent saxophonist and talented entertainer appeared in films and recorded with prominent artists including Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and Ella Fitzgerald.

For more information on Louis Jordan and his contributions to the music world, check out the Wikipedia site at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Jordan.

Happy Solstice!!!

Sony Music Service Review

In spite of everything I know about Sony and how anal the company is about "legally" owning music, I did a really stupid thing and tried out Connect Music, the music download service offered by Sony. The application is hard to install, with constant prompts about Windows Media Player 10 (which I already had installed for pity's sake) and how Windows may not work anymore if I continued with the installation. Then, once I did get the blasted app installed, trying to get the music downloaded was HELL. Disable the firewall. Clear Internet temp files. Clear cookies. Open port 8080. WTF? It was bad - the company should have paid me $10 to download the music I wanted. To top it off, now that I finally have the music, my computer is the only place I can play it. Oh, I can make a CD as long as the only place I want to play it is on my computer. That is the last time I do intentional business with Sony - EVER. If you are thinking about Connect Music - DON'T DO IT. You have been warned. :)

Words to Live By

“Our wretched species is so made that those who walk on the well-trodden path always throw stones at those who are showing a new road” --Voltaire

SHOW THE NEW ROAD and MAKE IT ROCK!

Band of the Month - The UnRead

Don't forget to check out the Band of the Month
-------------link over here on the side bar -->>
This month it's The Unread - these young men from Idaho ROCK and have some serious talent, so be sure to check out their MySpace page for more info:

http://www.myspace.com/theunread

<img style="DISPLAY: block; The accessibility of all styles and levels of music - from the newest garage band to the most well known pop group in the world - is greater then its ever been. For a music fan like me, the Internet is a double-edged sword (how's that for a goth image? :)). I can always find something new that I like, and hear bands I would never get to listen to if the radio and record labels controlled everything as in past years; but it also means the choices are endless! There are so MANY bands in the world - hundreds of thousands across the globe. I want to listen to them all, but there's just no way, especially with new bands joining the scene every day. One recommendation I would make to all the musicians out there trying to get noticed - if you have a site on MySpace or one of the other virtual gathering areas, USE IT. It's a powerful promotional tool. Reach out to your fans and respond as much as you can to the comments and emails. As one of those fans I can tell you that when you show a little love, we spread the word that you're out there and that you ROCK, so stay in touch and use the Internet to your advantage!

Band of the Month - Re:Ignition

Don't forget to check out the Band of the Month
-------------link over here on the side bar -->>

This month it's Re:Ignition. Thanks to Spazz & Dickey Lumbar for the write up, and if you want the link to the site, post a comment and I'll send it to ya.

The Drug Induced Seizure Dancers - Of course it's flattering to know that your music inspires people to cut a rug, but when the spoken word poetry pot head and her two hemp wearing side-kicks begin convulsing to the beat, front row, dead center, you have a problem. Suddenly, nobody is paying attention to your music. They are all just staring, mouths agape, at the freak show in the front row. The best way to handle this is to offer them $5 to run your merch table and purchase your rights to a seizure-free audience.

Band Humpers - You know the ones I’m talking about. They show up. They have big knockers They make you laugh a bit, and after a few swigs from wine-in-a-box they are ready to mate. Not bad, right? Well, faster than you can say "My car or yours?" she’s played “Hop On Pop” with your entire band, the roadies, and even that fan you thought was gay. Now the vortex of drama begins, complete with several "you stole her from me!" fights, an abortion, a few bouts of herpes, and a broken heart or two. Meanwhile, little miss cum-dumpster has moved on to some other band, leaving your little world in ruin. What’s the moral of the story? Don't welcome the town mattress into your universe unless you have the stamina to clean up the mess she leaves behind.

The Whack Jobs - Be wary of any groupie that does the following:
-Groupies that go to every show. EVERY show. Even the song fest you played for your parents on their anniversary... in their living room.
-Groupies that know every last detail about your personal life. For instance, if some chick knows that you listen to Silent Lucidity alone in your room clutching your teddy bear every time it rains, she has to go.
-Groupies that go through your trash. Unless you happen to have homeless, starving groupies that live in cardboard boxes, trash snooping is not cool.
-Groupies that are over the age of 35. We have a word for band-obsessed losers that are old enough to give up on having children; Stalkers. They want your seed. Get rid of them.-Groupies that piss off your girlfriends. You know what those fights can be like, and they’re not worth it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

"audience relations" or "backstage manager" Groupie - This is the chick that shows up does some merch, some flyers, some mailers and before you realize it she has moved in, changed her address, and dubbed herself "media liaison." Hell she even somehow managed to get her own e-mail address on your web page. So there you are with your cock in hand asking yourself out loud "What the fuck?" What started out as some free labor and a blowjob has now turned into a permanent fixture, who nags because you have no shower in that rehearsal space you call home. Even worse, you can't fire her because you never hired her and now you're stuck with a hall monitor that believes your band would fall apart without her presence. When you do finally get rid of her she only becomes the Whack Job Groupie as described above.

I Heart Your Band 4 Ever - These are the fucking High School kids who have decided if your shitty band breaks up they have no reason to go on living. They have your stickers on their backpacks, trapper-keepers, composition notebook journals, and most likely on the crotch of their panties. As cute as these wee little hamsters might be, just recall the fate of poor old Professor Humbert and keep your distance.

The Understudies - These people show up, fall in love with your music, learn every note on every instrument, and then hope and pray for one of you to get decapitated by a speeding bus so they can fill your shoes. These buzzards will hang around for eons just waiting for one of you to fall ill, quit, go off on a solo career, or get a real job. So be wary of fans that mutter "Flu? Looks like cancer to me. That said, I miss the multi-person dynamic that was there when [the other guy] :) was fronting. Don't get me wrong - it doesn't have to be Break as the additional band guy, there just needs to be someone there to play off him, because that was part of what made the band so fun to watch. The energy that gets generated by two guys bantering back and forth and getting the crowd going is way cool, and it would be good if NWR can restore that in some way. They still ROCK and here are the pics to prove it:

Album Review - Empty Heart: Loaded Gun

Re:Ignition has released an album all hard rock fans dream about - an album where every song is one we want to listen to again and again and again. Even my favorite bands miss this nearly impossible mark; there's almost always a song or two I can do without, and end up skipping over in the car or in the MP3 mix. Not these guys. On their MySpace blog they've asked for fans to post their favorite songs from the CD, and the same response keeps repeating: how the hell are we supposed to pick just ONE???? The timing on these songs is intense, the lyrics intelligent, and the low end kicks ass. This groupie reviewed the band's live show back at the end of July, and boy-oh-boy did these guys put their music where their mouth is. I don't know which is better - the CD (cause I can listen any time I want) or the live show - best just to have both I think.

The More Things Change...

...the more they stay the same. When I first started going out to shows, it seemed that every member of every band had been the previous member of every other band. It's still like that - a bit incestuous and fun to watch. I had never been to a rock show there before, and I spent most of my time trying to imagine what it would've been like to see these two bands at the W.O.W., John Henry's or even Latitude 21. Believe me when I say it wasn't the bands that were lacking at this particular event, in spite of the piss poor turnout. That said, let's get on to the music!

Fatecage - technically these two guys are amazing. That's right, TWO. Technology takes care of the other band member(s) you might be expecting when you walk in. The music is smart and between songs, Busby is super witty on the mic - happy birthday dude! Since there are only two guys here, a really cool addition would be images (abstract art maybe?) projected on the walls behind them, but other then that, they're solid and rockin'.

The next band of the evening was Attack Ships on Fire (and wouldn't I love to know the inside joke that created that name - A.S.O.F.!) and these guys were loud, fun, and it's a cryin' shame that the venue didn't support the music. Mike is one of the stronger vocalists I have heard in a while, and the whole band looks like a movie cast, which is hugely appealing for those of us who are into watching :). I got the feeling they were all holding back a bit, but I'm willing to bet longshot odds that had more to do with the miniscule space they were forced to occupy then anything else. I hope we didn't disappoint them too much and they'll come back and play a different venue.

Next scheduled event is Tuesday October 17th - The Accident Experiment @ Diablo's. The surprise of the night (for me anyway - I'm sure plenty of the fans there already knew the score) was Re:Ignition. Hard music fronted by a guy with the voice of an angel. Holy cats. Fabulous show. The venue is kinda small, but that means one of two things - you can get really close to the stage, or it's so packed you can't get in, and the band can't move either. One downer - the moshers were a bit out of hand. I like a solid mosh pit as much as the next girl, but c'mon guys - show a little respect. If a girl doesn't want to join, being an asshole isn't going to convince her. Other then that, it was a fun show - good music, good company - ROCK-N-ROLL baby!

CD Review - Recommendations (or not :))

Those that know me will probably read this review and think "I can't believe she is listening to that!" Well, before you get ahead of yourself, remember that a good groupie will try anything once, twice if she likes it. ;) I did put my tongue on the CD covers, but it just isn't the same as putting it on the band [sigh]. So, here we go:

Peeping Tom/Self-titled: Interesting mix of music. Since this really isn't my style, I don't know that I would continue to listen to it if it weren't for all the cool sounds and structures that an online project like this brings to the album. Oh yeah, and the fact that it's MIKE PATTON on vocals keeps bringing me back, but y'all know that's a personal preference - I could listen to that man sing all day. That said, there are some catchy tunes on the CD - Mojo, Kill the DJ (this one is my fav), and We're Not Alone are the songs that keep my attention, but Sucker and Don't Even Trip are good too. If you're in the mood for something kinda different, pick up this disc.

The Raconteurs/Broken Boy Soldiers: Cool. That's really all that needs to be said. This album is contemporary and nostalgic at the same time. Lots of levels to the music and the lyrics are not too literal and not too subtle - intelligent song-writing seems to be the name of the game on this one. Give it a listen if you like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or Jack White. :)

Show Review - Local Boys Make Good

The crowd wasn't very big, but man the house was ROCKIN. One thing about shows at the W.O.W. - when it isn't packed, the pit really gets moving and you can get some momentum going. Northwest Royale is at the top of the local list when it comes to hardcore - I haven't seen anyone yet who matches their energy (go BREAK!!!). A few items of note - there were some technical difficulties with the equipment, which caused some excessive downtime between songs. The band handled it well by engaging the crowd, and managed to keep things charged in spite of the time gaps. Maybe they need some more roadies to help with the gear. ;) They also wished one of their long time fans a happy birthday by playing a song from one of their very early albums, which they hadn't yet played live with the current line up. Completely pulled it out - if they hadn't said anything no one would have known. Last but definitely not least, these guys are a band for the fans. The last two songs had the stage packed with all the kids from the floor, adding their voices to the show. It's so cool that NWR knows that fans are what makes them - not only did they let everyone up without throwing a fit, they welcomed them and even gave them center stage. PROPS boys - that is the classiest move I have seen by any band in a long time, local or otherwise. For all of you slackers out there, get off your asses and go see these guys live. You won't know what NWR is all about until you do.

Project Update

Gyefinger has started his first collaboration project, and it promises to be educational as well as fun.
